Six day old sweetness.

I told Courtney the same thing I tell all new moms, to please bring your little one in at 5 or 6 days old.  There is a little window of opportunity at this point where the babies are still curled up, have full bellies, and sleep most of the time.  Little J, however, didn’t want to miss out on the fun, and tried his best to stay awake, but patience paid off and we got these sleepy shots.

One excited big sister-to-be!

I met Alison amongst the hundreds of shopping bellies at the Mamas & Chicks Show, and am so glad she decided to take advantage of the feature I had on at the moment.  Just look at the excitement on this big sister-to-be’s face!  I’m so looking forward to meeting the youngest member of the family!

Third time and still a charm.

I have had the pleasure of photographing little L twice before, and this third time he did not disappoint.  Full of smiles (and debonair style, thanks to his mom), he just kept the charm coming.  He’ll have to fight the girls off when he’s older, especially if he follows in his dad’s RCMP footsteps. :^)

The Smiliest Newborn Ever.

From sweet little smirk to big goofy grin, wee little man L is easily the smiliest newborn I have ever had the pleasure to place in front of my lens.  The experts say it’s just gas, but it’s much more fun to believe that this little one is just plain full of joy to finally be with his totally-in-love-with-him parents.  Thank you, J and W!

And then there were four...

Thank you so much, Andrew and Jen, for bringing your two beautiful little girls into my studio!  One aware of the camera but so disarmingly charming in front of the lens, and the other too young to know, and so sweet and lovely.  Love the silly faces newborns make as they discover every muscle in their tiny bodies! :^)

And the winner is....!

Well, Friday’s Mamas & Chicks Show was a resounding success, with hundreds of people coming to see what the show had to offer.  Once again, I ran the Cutest Chick Photo Contest, and once again, I had a blast doing it.  Seventy-five wee ones took a seat in front of my lens, and I was reminded yet again of the fact that I have the greatest job ever.   All of them were charming and adorable, and our small panel of judges had one heck of a time choosing the best shot of the day.  It took them 3 days and some debating, but our winner is the cutie pie at the end of this entry!  Will the mama of this chick please get in touch with me?  You have won a free portrait session and print package, valued at over $200!

All parents can see their childrens’ photo by clicking here, which will take you to a slideshow of all contest entries.  If you love your shot of your little one, you do have the option to purchase.  Also, because I had so much fun with your kids, I would like to offer all of you $50 off portrait sessions from now until the end of May.  Visit my website here to view galleries, rates, contact information, and more.

Enjoy the show, and thank you again for letting me spend a little quality time with your beautiful kids!

Babies helping babies :^).

Well, Spring is certainly springing!  The weather is beautiful, the summer wardrobes are being brought out of storage, the kids are outside playing until the last shred of sunlight disappears and they crash into bed.   And love is in the air…for some of our closest neighbours!   Wild birds and mammals are all having babies of their own, and wildlife rehabilitation centres are overflowing with tiny orphaned patients.  Why post this information on a photography blog?  Well….

From now until June 21st, 10% of all sales through Shauna Reay Photography will go straight to Toronto Wildlife Centre in an effort to help some of these wee ones.  Why not take the opportunity to have some beautiful portraits done of your child, and help a tiny orphaned rabbit/duckling/fox/owl/etc at the same time?  Toronto Wildlife Centre helps thousands of animals a year, but many are turned away due to lack of funding.  Together we can help!  Visit the TWC website HERE to learn more about what they do and ways you can help.

Get in touch with the studio today to book your session!   Call 905.666.4477 or email: info@shaunareay.com.

How to properly preserve your prints

Whether you have invested in professional photography or just have some treasured snapshots of your own, one thing can be sure – you don’t want your prints (and memories) to fade.  You can drastically extend the life of your photographic prints by following a few simple guidelines.

  1. Light.  Be careful where you decide to display your prints; don’t put them in direct sunlight (especially colour prints, which are more susceptible to fading).
  2. Moisture.  High humidity can lead to a much shorter life for your photos.  Generally basements are not good places for prints, negatives, and slides unless there is some kind of dehumidifier used.
  3. Temperature. The higher the temperature, the quicker a print will be affected by fading.  Avoid leaving your prints in excessively hot areas (attics, cars in the summer, etc).
  4. Display and storage materials. When deciding on frames and albums to show and store your photos, make sure you choose products made with acid-free materials (mats in frames, pages in albums).  Non acid-free materials will cause yellowing over time.

If you are using a pro photographer for your treasured family photos, ask them if their pro lab offers the option of coating your prints with a UV protective spray (most do).  This can protect your images from fading.  If you are having them printed yourself and the images are especially valuable to you, you may want to have them done at a lab that offers both pro and public services.  Silvano’s in Toronto is a good option, and they can ship anywhere.

If you follow these guidelines, you should be able to pass your treasured family portraits down to generations and generations to come.  Your children’s photos could be hanging on the walls of your great great great great (you get the idea) grandchildren!
